Breeders of Highland Ponies & Dales Ponies
Our breeds
Welcome to the world of the Highland pony and the Dales pony. Both breeds originate from the British Isles, and were used for all purposes on small farms. The Highland Pony is the largest of the Native UK pony breeds though they are as large in stature as most working QHs, and larger than most Arabs or Morgans.
The Dales pony is listed as critically endangered, while the Highland pony is listed currently as vunerable on the endangered list. The Highland Pony Society of Scotland has been working hard to improve breeding practices to encourage breeders to breed ponies with more genetic variablity to keep them from loosing breeding lines. The society has worked hard to come up with a system to use their pedigree base to come up with inbreeding, and herd variables to assist the Highland pony breeders in their search for breeding stock to; as well as to continue breeding stock with the best potential crosses.
Both the Dales Pony and the Highland pony are great mounts, as well as harness horses. They make great mounts for adults or larger children, and both Highland ponies, and Dales ponies so well in harness. Highland ponies are the larger of the 2 breeds, and carry a greater variety of color.
All of our ponies are broke to ride, and most are broke to drive or will be as soon as they are of age to do so. Both Highland ponies and Dales ponies are very easily trained, and are very personable breeds.
You may visit one of our Highland ponies at the Kentucky Horse Park's breeds barn. She is there as the Highland pony breed representative.
StallionsThese are the stallions standing at Baroque Farm. All of our stallions were hand selected. Each stallion comes from different, proven lines. All of our boys were bought because they have fantastic temperaments, and are very great movers, and are very athletic. We currently have 4 licensed and imported Highland pony stallions, one licensed and imported, Dales stallion, and one CH PRE Andalusian stallion. |
Mares The ladies of Baroque Farm. Our mares were all hand selected. They complement the stallion lines that we have chosen. Each mare has certain qualities that we are looking for in addition to their fantastic natures. We have 4 breeding age Highland pony mares, 1 Highland pony 2 year old, 1 Higland pony yearling filly , 1 weanling filly, as well as one imported Dales mare. We also have 2 PRE mares. |
FoalsThis page is for our foals to be introduced each year. Some will be for sale, others kept to further our breeding program. We do have a foal waiting list. We have both Highland pony and Dales pony foals born each year. We also have Spanish and Warlander foals born each year. EMail us to find out more. |
Here at Baroque Farm we breed for temperament, type, and movement. We try to stray away from grey color due to melanomas; however, we will not turn down a good horse due to color alone as long as it is not homozygous grey. Both homozygous and heterozygous grey ponies or horses are inclined to have melanomas. You can find the percentages of homozygous vs heterozygous grey for melanomas by searching on line. The Highland pony, and the Dales pony have much to offer many US riders. Please feel free to email, call or visit our facebook page with questions. We are also always here to help with any information that we can provide. Visitors are also welcome by appointment to meet these wonderful equines in person. They love visitors!
OUR GOALTo continue helping our 2 rare breeds flourish while importing new Highland Pony bloodlines to improve stock already in the USA. |
